Schedule for Spring 2009

Labs will start the week of of January 12 and end the week of April 20.

Labs will not meet during King Week or Spring Break.

Required Materials

Students enrolled in combined lecture and lab courses do not have to buy a lab manual, but they will need to buy a blue lab card.

Students in 1111K and 1112K will need a lab manual, a clear plastic metric ruler and a calculator.

Students in 2211K and 2212K will need the above items plus a bound quadrille ruled notebook and a PC data storage device (USB Flash Drive). Spiral bound or loose leaf notebooks are not acceptable.

Physics 1111, 1112, 2211 and 2212 students are required to purchase a Physics supply card. These blue cards are available for $20 at the Park Place Bookstore, the GSU Bookstore and the Georgia Bookstore. Lab manuals are available only at the Park Place Bookstore

Students will not be allowed into the lab without a current lab manual and lab card. Students who do not have their materials the first week will receive a zero for that experiment. They may not make up the experiment in another lab section. There will be no exceptions.

Students who do have their materials by the second week of labs will be dropped from the course for nonattendance.

The Park Place Bookstore at the corner of Park Place and Decatur Street has the best prices for notebooks and rulers.

Lab Attendance

Going to the right lab

Please check the schedules posted outside each lab room to make sure that you are in the correct room.

When you registered for an introductory course you also registered for a specific lab time and day. This is the lab section you must attend.

Required attendance

Each lecturer has his or her own minimum attendance requirements, but in general students must attend a minimum of ten experiments in order to pass the course.

When your average grade for the semester is calculated the lowest grade is dropped. Therefore you can miss one experiment for any reason without penalty. If you miss more than one lab the missing grades will be averaged into the final grade as zeroes.

Make up labs

Students may not make up missed labs the first two weeks. After that, if you miss your regular lab you may attend two make up labs during the semester. You may attend another lab section if space is available and the instructor agrees. You must download the lab makeup form and turn it in to the makeup lab instructor before the lab quiz. If the information on the form is not correct your grade might not be recorded.

Students may not make up missed labs the first two weeks. If you miss your regular lab after the first two weeks students may go to another lab section if space is available. Before the lab starts ask the instructor if there is space for you. Please note on all material that you turn in that you are a visitor and write down your usual lab day and time as well as your full name and student ID number.

You may only make up a missed lab during the week that the experiment is taught.

If you miss labs due to a hardship such as severe illness, military service, or jury duty discuss the problem with your course professor.

Cancellations

If your lab does not meet because the university is closed because of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstance, study for the next experiment on the schedule. The missing grade will be dropped without penalty to the student.

Lab Exemptions

If you are repeating a course but passed the lab portion you may be able to use your previous lab grade and exempt the lab attendance requirement. If you took the course at GSU fill out a Lab Exemption Form and give it to Carola Butler. The form is also available in room 400 SA where you may put it in Carola Butler's mailbox.

If you took the course at another school contact Carola Butler before labs start.

Lab Section Changes

It is sometimes possible for a student to change lab sections during the semester. If you need to change lab sections, email Carola Butler.

Overflows

If the course you want is full, keep checking- spaces frequently open up during the registration period. A small number of overflows are sometimes available for some courses. Apply for an overflow by completing the Overflow Request Form and giving it to Carola Butler.

You will be informed by email if your overflow can be granted. Overflows are given out the day before registration ends.
