GENERAL INFORMATION

The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers programs of study leading to the Master of Science degree in physics and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in physics and in astronomy. The Department's goal of excellence on the graduate level is promoted by: an emphasis on meaningful research from the student's first quarter in residence, a low student/faculty ratio allowing individual attention to students, a curriculum providing a solid foundation in physics and astronomy as well as enough diversity for individual interests, active participation by students at major accelerators and telescopes at national laboratories and observatories, access to powerful computing and image processing facilities in the Department, well-equipped experimental research laboratories, particular attention to training in skills to enhance the students' employment prospects, and close working relationships with scientists actively engaged in research.

FINANCIAL AID

Financial support is available for graduate students in the form of research assistantships and teaching assistantships. Graduate assistants currently receive from $18,000 to $19,200 plus a full tuition waiver for the calendar year, and pay approximately $460 in fees per semester. For international students, the health insurance is around $320 per year. Stipend will increase after passing the qualifying examination. Students interested in receiving financial support should indicate this to either the physics or astronomy graduate directors. The university adheres to the CGS resolution and expects the applicants to abide by that too.

Employment outside the Department for students receiving a stipend is forbidden. Exceptions may be made in unusual circumstances with the approval of the student's research director and the director of graduate studies.

Highly qualified students whose interests lie within the areas are
encouraged to apply for any of the fellowships listed below:
Brains and Behavior ( B&B Neuroscience) Fellowship
