The Department of Physics and Astronomy seeks to encourage and support those who are preparing to teach in the early childhood through middle school years. Two courses are offered with the intent of providing a sound background in physical science. These courses are taught along the theme "Sense or nonsense? How can you tell?" and emphasize connections to everyday phenomena. The courses feature laboratory experiences integrated into the class period plus an emphasis on "hands-on" and interactive classroom exercises.

Physics 2010K for students in the Early Childhood program.

Physics 3010K for students preparing for teaching in Middle School.

These courses provide background in all the physical science subject areas that are recommended for coverage in grades K-6 in Georgia public schools. This course material has been taught since 1991 and was developed in close cooperation with the Early Childhood and the Middle, Secondary and Instructional Technology departments in the School of Education. While every effort is made to model appropriate science teaching methods and materials, the course does not specifically address "teaching methods". Rather it is a content course which attempts to set a "high water mark" in concept understanding which is significantly above the level at which the subjects will be taught in the early grades.
