Graduate Programs

General Information

The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers programs of study leading to the Master of Science degree in physics and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in physics, astro-physics and astronomy. The Department's goal of excellence on the graduate level is promoted by: an emphasis on meaningful research from the student's first quarter in residence, a low student/faculty ratio allowing individual attention to students, a curriculum providing a solid foundation in physics and astronomy as well as enough diversity for individual interests, active participation by students at major accelerators and telescopes at national laboratories and observatories, access to powerful computing and image processing facilities in the Department, well-equipped experimental research laboratories, particular attention to training in skills to enhance the students' employment prospects, and close working relationships with scientists actively engaged in research.
