Abstract:

Curt Henry, an aerospace engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for more than 20 years, will provide an insider's report on the factors influencing what science gets done on space missions implemented at JPL. The differences between competed missions and missions directed (given) to a NASA center will be discussed. Project organizations, implementation approaches, recurring technical challenges, and political considerations will be described. He will attempt to describe how one can distinguish between engineers and scientists when encountered "in the wild".
